IFS PPWR Conformance Self-assessment: from Pilot to Practice 16 September 2026

IFS PPWR Conformance Self-assessment: from Pilot to Practice

Following a successful pilot phase with 70 participating companies, the IFS PPWR Conformance Self-Assessment is now available in the IFS Database.

The tool provides a standardised and efficient way for companies to assess whether robust processes are in place to manage packaging-related data and documentation and address relevant PPWR obligations. It helps identify potential gaps and areas where further action may be needed.

The first stage of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) came into force in August 2026. It sets specific requirements for economic operators involved in placing packaging on the EU market. Depending on their role, companies need to fulfil specific obligations and ensure that relevant information and documentation are available and reliable.

“The pilot confirmed the value of using a process-oriented approach to PPWR requirements. Reliable packaging data does not happen by itself. It requires robust processes, clear responsibilities and effective cooperation across the supply chain. The IFS PPWR Conformance Self-assessment is an easily accessible service. It enables companies to evaluate where they stand, identify gaps and strengthen the processes behind the packaging information they share with their business partners.”

Stephan Tromp, Managing Director, IFS

Tested in practice

During the pilot phase, participating suppliers tested the IFS PPWR Conformance Self-assessment and provided feedback on its content and usability. They especially valued the fact that the online questionnaire was lean, clear, and straightforward. Their input helped IFS further refine the tool and ensure that it offers a practical and efficient way to assess PPWR-related processes.

Compact and easy to use

The self-assessment consists of 18 multiple-choice questions and considers the classification of relevant product ranges and packaging types. It is scalable for the next stages of the regulation.

The questionnaire is available in the IFS Database, which also enables companies to store relevant supporting documents in one place, including technical documentation and EU Declarations of Conformity. This helps keep the information and documentation supporting PPWR-related processes organised and accessible.

The self-assessment is particularly relevant for private-label suppliers and importers, helping them strengthen the processes behind the packaging information they provide to retailers and other business partners. The self-assessment is initially available free of charge to its users.

Take the first step towards greater confidence

The IFS PPWR Conformance Self-Assessment marks the first step in the IFS PPWR Conformance Solution. Where appropriate, specific PPWR-related processes and obligations can be assessed in greater depth through an auditor-performed check as a next step. The development of this check is in its final stages. As soon as it is ready, details will be provided on the IFS Website and in the newsletters.
